Tranquil is a luminaire designed in response to the devastating earthquakes that struck southeastern Turkey in 2023. Informed by research on how light affects human emotion, Tranquil was created to offer a moment of stillness amid chaos. Many displaced by the disaster were forced into unfamiliar, temporary shelters—campgrounds, container homes, and makeshift spaces. I imagined the emotional toll of such dislocation and set out to design a light that could bring warmth, comfort, and a sense of home.
To make it accessible and adaptable for different spaces, Tranquil is crafted as a flat-pack piece, easy to assemble and disassemble. Its soft glow and calming materials aim to create an atmosphere of peace—wherever it is placed.
